About Vår Energi

Founded in 2018 through the merger of the Italian energy company Eni’s Norwegian business and Point Resources, Vår Energi builds on more than 60 years of operational heritage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Following the acquisition of ExxonMobil’s Norwegian upstream assets in 2019, the company became the second largest operator on the Norwegian Continental Shelf after Equinor.

About the project

Project start: 2025
Current status: Final stage of implementation
Planned production date: August 2026

Vår Energi is a leading operator in the Norwegian oil and gas industry, where safety, environmental protection and operational efficiency come first. Like many operators, the company found its chemical management spread across disconnected systems and manual routines. Without a single place to manage everything, the work was time-consuming and left room for errors and bottlenecks, so a more capable and user-friendly system became a clear priority.

In 2025, Vår Energi set out to change that, choosing ChemCenter as one fully integrated solution for managing chemicals across the organisation. The focus has been on bringing the whole process together, from application to risk assessment and approval, in smooth workflows that keep the company compliant at every step. Getting the move right mattered just as much: migrating years of historical data safely and investing in training so teams could adopt the new system with confidence. Vår Energi has been a hands-on partner throughout, shaping ChemCenter to fit the way its people work and keeping the transition as seamless as possible for everyday users. The result is a real step away from fragmented, manual processes and toward safer, more efficient operations.

ChemCenter is being rolled out as Vår Energi’s company-wide chemical management system, replacing the existing chemical portal. It brings together a customised chemical portal, chemical application, and Health, Environment & Safety (HES) risk assessment and reporting, along with automatic reading of safety data sheets (SDS), hazard classification, substitution and hazard-list screening, CLP labelling and exposure registration. ChemCenter is delivered as a web platform and progressive web application (PWA) for PC, tablet and mobile, with role-based access, reporting and data export (CSV/XLSX and REST API), and includes migrating around 4,600 chemical products and their data from the legacy system.

Primary use cases

  • Maintain a familiar, searchable chemical portal that mirrors Vår Energi’s existing system, giving users one-click access to the safety data sheet, risk report, CLP label and application for each product.
  • Submit chemical-use applications with location, department and material code, and process them through automated, hazard-based approval workflows.
  • Carry out Health, Environment & Safety (HES) risk assessments, reusing data from the SDS and application and defining barriers by the hierarchy of control.
  • Generate end-user risk reports and CLP labels, and screen chemicals for substitution against priority and hazard lists (REACH Annex XVII, REACH Candidate List, HOCNF).

Project objectives

  • Improve control of chemical management in line with Vår Energi’s HSE strategy and chemical-management procedure.
  • Standardise and digitalise workflows while preserving familiarity for existing users.
  • Replace the legacy chemical portal and manual processes
  • Reduce administrative effort through automation (SDS reading, hazard identification, substitution planning and risk reporting).
  • Strengthen compliance and traceability (CLP, REACH and HOCNF) with built-in documentation and change logging
  • Transfer system operation, maintenance and lifecycle. management to Netpower under the licence agreement.

Key functionality

  • Custom chemical portal and substance registry, searchable and filterable, mirroring Vår Energi’s existing portal so users feel at home from day one.
  • Safety data sheet (SDS) management with automatic data extraction and hazard classification.
  • Chemical applications with automated, hazard-based approval workflows.
  • Risk assessments and automatic risk reports across Health, Environment & Safety (HES).
  • Exposure registration for hazardous chemicals.
  • Substitution and hazard-list screening (REACH Annex XVII, REACH Candidate List, HOCNF).

Integrations

  • SAP: SAP/material number maintained on each product, with room for extended SAP integration in later phases.
  • Identity provider (SSO): Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD, with automated user provisioning via SCIM and single sign-on using Microsoft credentials.

    Deployment

Number of sites/assets: Four operated offshore production installations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf: the Goliat FPSO (Barents Sea), the Jotun FPSO and Ringhorne platform in the Balder area, and the Gjøa platform (North Sea), plus subsea-tied fields (Duva, Fenja) and onshore offices.

Number of users: More than 4000 users. Organisation-wide, covering all Vår Energi personnel plus relevant contractors, provisioned automatically via Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD and single sign-on.

Geographical scope: Norway, across the Norwegian Continental Shelf
